Since this receives a decal set rather than paint, only the back, riser, and edges have to be painted.
This crates a lot of mist over spray onto the wood, which is very fine beading. It has to be sanded off, prior to applying any decal(s).
I’ve included a couple photos showing that.
To apply decals correctly, first the excess should be trimmed off, then proper sizing can be done; ensure your surface is free from even the tiniest piece if debris. then fix the wide end down with painters tape, flip it over , and peel back about one foot (evenly) of the backer.
Keep the peeled adhesive area suspended from the playfield for now, and make sure your forward lower edge is aligned, once it is, then you can press the decal down from the rear edge, to center, then out to the left, and right edges. Peel off more backer, with the decal now flat. Repeat until done.
The wood used on these new playfields is harder than original. This makes it very difficult to add screw in metal rebound posts. Most threads will break once 3/4 screwed in, leaving the thread in the playfield, now you have a problem!
It’s best to add a new “through hole” post (as pictured) when underside space allows.
Going through everything, I did find a organ switch that was always closed, since a stack wafer was missing; causing a short.
Added some old/new comparison photos of critical flipper components, which shows why rebuilds are required.
Also, see the unique Data East outhole kicker linkage, which always has excessive wear, causing slop/slow kickout.
Pictures added of the rebuilt solenoid assemblies. All the main bases were powder coated, same color as the cabinet body parts.
Also, take note where a through playfield rebound post was added to the inside edge of the right organ side.
You will see this area ball beat on most POTO, this addition will eliminate future damage.
Another area that needs attention on this title, is the middle left side VUK capture. it was prone to the ball getting trapped in behind the 3 upright switches, sometimes causing a switch matrix short.
Proper placement of mini ball bounce support guides is important here.
This pin should be completed in the next few day, if all system test ok, stay tuned.
I AM A PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!
